The library serves the municipality of Oslo and is Norway´s largest public library, founded in 1785.

Our services are available for everyone - individuals, institutions, students in the public school system and at the university level, the business community, and public administration. In addition to the main library and regular branches, we also provide library services to the Oslo prison system fengselsbibliotekene and patients and their families at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet

  • Library cards are available to everyone who resides in Norway, and you must have a Norwegian social security number, a D or DUF number to obtain a library card.
  • Your card may be used in most Norwegian libraries.
  • You must present your library card in order to borrow or use our services.
  • Your signature indicates that you have accepted the lending regulations.

There are several specialised collections. Some can be found in the main library Hovedbiblioteket such as The Multilingual Library, which serves the entire country with its collection in approximately thirty-five languages, the original Deichman collection, a music collection, a collection for children and youth, and a special service and collection Skoletjenesten available to the Oslo school system. Others, such as the large collection of graphic novels at the Grünerlokka branch Serieteket, can be found in our network of branch libraries.

Patrons can also choose from a large selection of books in Nordic and other European languages as well as graphic novels, videos, DVDs, and audiobooks. The mail library also offers board games and musical instruments for loan, and houses a makerspace Folkeverkstedet.

Plans are now underway for a new public main library in the vicinity of the Oslo fjord and City Hall.
